Do you care about parks and gardens in Potrero? Complete the Green Spaces Survey today!

Do you want our neighborhood parks and gardens better maintained and improved?

A group of volunteer leaders from the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association (DNA) and the Potrero Boosters have joined together with UP Urban, a non-profit, to form a Green Benefit District (GBD) in our neighborhood. As part of this process we’re surveying the community about neighborhood green spaces, how you use them, how you’d like to see them maintained and/or improved, and your willingness to fund maintenance and/or improvements. The Green Spaces Survey is an important opportunity to share your priorities and opinions. Your feedback will ultimately be incorporated into a draft Green Management Plan that reflects our neighborhood’s shared vision and goals for parks and green space in Potrero Hill and Dogpatch.

Another fab Potrero Hill Festival!

One of the bands that played today, with part of the big view in the background.

I love living in Potrero Hill every day — but my favorite day of the year here is the day of the Potrero Hill Festival. And each year, the “little festival with a big view” just seems to get better.

I’ve written here before about the neighborhood feeling this festival promotes. I’m not normally a fan of street fairs, which tend to be overly crowded for my taste and full of strangers. But at the Potrero Hill Festival I always see co-workers, neighbors, fellow community-builders — and often even people I know from outside Potrero. I get to catch up with people and see what’s going on in the neighborhood. Not to mention enjoy the sunny weather we always seem to get for it, the lovely views, and live music.

This gives new meaning to the term “boy band” — is this singer really seven years old?

This year’s highlight was an unexpected one: Performances by young members of the San Francisco Rock Project. The site says it’s for performers age 7 -18, but some of them looked younger to me. Check out the videos below to see how good just a small sampling of them were!

I’d like to find ways to extend the feeling of community on the hill beyond this one day. We can start by getting more contributors participating in this blog. But it would be nice to find ways for people to gather more often in person. If you have ideas, write them in the Comments section below, or contact us. Let’s all work together to make Potrero even more of a community!

For more videos of the Rock Project, see http://youtu.be/bJkeudpMeTshttp://youtu.be/PiAjnl_S-cI, and http://youtu.be/XvItDC5RtBg.

Although they played till the end of the festival when people are usually heading out, the Rock Project attracted quite a crowd!

The petting zoo is always a big hit at the festival.

We ran into a new friend, RT, whom we met at a fellow community-builder’s wedding last weekend.

Next community-building meeting: Thurs Oct 4, 6:00 pm

There’s a lot happening in Potrero, and the Rebuild Potrero Community-Building Initiative is part of the change! Join us at the next Community-Building Meeting to hear about the progress and provide input on future activities.

  • When: Thursday, October 4, 6 – 8 pm. Dinner will be served at 6:00.
  • Where: The Nabe, 953 De Haro Street

Just a few of the exciting developments that we’ll be discussing:

  • Free community ZUMBA class and other Healthy Living Activities. Every day there is an activity to encourage you to live a healthier lifestyle and meet your Potrero neighbors.  Learn more about these activities and brainstorm how to improve the program for 2013.
  • The new Texas Street Garden. This  1/3-acre community-based garden is under construction and will be opening up to the community later this fall. Help us get the Potrero Sustainable Living Group up and running again, and hear from the Garden Managers about the garden educational program that will be starting later this year.
  • A community-wide event. The last community-wide party was a huge success. Let’s start planning the next one!
  • The Healthy Generations Project. In partnership with the Potrero Family Resource Center, the San Francisco Foundation, and Potrero residents, we are kicking off a parenting program focused on preparing Potrero kids for kindergarten by protecting their brain development during the critical ages of 0-5. Learn more about this incredible collaboration.

So please join us, and be part of the discussion — and part of making our community even better!
